Patent laws in USA was established "to promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries as provided in USA Constitution.

A patent in USA is a proprietary right granted by the Federal government to an inventor who files a patent application with the USA Patent Office. There are three types of patents available in the United States: (1) a utility patent, which covers the functional aspects of processes and products; (2) a design patent, which covers the attractive design of useful objects; and (3) a plant patent, which covers a new variety of living plant.
